How to become a teacher in Public Schools in the USA

You must fulfill certain requirements before you are allowed to teach in a public School in the USA.

Each state is allowed to set teacher licensure / certification requirements for that state. This information can be accessed from the Department of Education website for the specific State.

The following requirements are however common with most of the states:-

While the state licensing requirements do differ among states, you will find that most states require teachers to fulfill the following requirements:

1.Prospective teachers must hold a bachelor's degree, and, in some states, a post-baccalaureate or master's degree. Elementary education teachers will usually need either a major or minor in education (for B.A.) or a Masters in Education. Prospective teachers for secondary subjects will usually be required to have a degree in the area they wish to teach.

2.Teachers will then be required to complete an approved, accredited education program that fulfills student teaching and practicum requirements.

3.There are other requirements that your state may require. One of them is that Teachers may be required to show a strong liberal arts foundation in addition to their degree major. Your state may require that you pass a state test or pass the PRAXIS exam while other states may also require that you show proof of taking various Colleges courses. The course may include math, language, social studies, English and science. These are particularly required if you are seeking licensure in elementary education.
