A Facebook degree!! A Twitter degree!! And not just a degree, a Masters degree. Doesn’t sound right? The truth that there are colleges offering a Facebook degree. But that is the name the general media has adopted.

But what exatly is on offer. The Birmingham City University in UK and the University of Salford, also in UK are offering degrees in social media.

This has really come as a surprise to many. And there are multitudes and multitudes of critics. What are the Universities up to? Many have asked. For others, it is a wait and see altitude.

The Universities have insisted that what they are offering it is a social media degree and is much more that you do when you visit Facebook or twitter

What will students learn and what will they become?

The Birmingham City University says that the course is designed for media or cultural studies graduates who have experience in the web, public relations and marketing and who are looking for an opportunity to explore the emerging area of social media through practice or scholarly research.

The University claims that after graduating, students can pursue careers in different fields of social media and may be engaged in the following among other things.

• Become social media consultants
• Development of innovative and low cost communication strategies for third sector organizations using social media tools;
• Develop innovative and alternative media projects and develop scholarly interest in social media and contribute to the development of social media industry
• Work with existing mainstream media organizations as they develop social media strategies;

The University of Salford says that their course is designed for creative social entrepreneurs and people who want to make a change to communities through deployment of social media.

The University of Salford expects that graduates of the course will have the necessary skill to work in institutions engaging with social media like the traditional broadcasters and other organizations who are looking for ways to work with social media.

There has been tremendous increase in the use of social media and organizations have seen this as a perfect opportunity to market.

But whether this field has become so complex or otherwise to require participants to have a degree is a matter of debate. The course content is also an issue. Many would be interested to know if the course content is beyond what is available the public.
